Laurent Cloquet specializes in Banking & Finance, Regulatory, FinTech, M&A, Corporate Law, International Economic Sanctions and Embargo.
Laurent’s practice is focused on all areas of banking and financial law including, investment funds, asset management, MiFID, derivatives, corporate finance, bank lending (corporate and consumer loans), payment services (PSD2) and regulatory matters.
Laurent is particularly specialized in regulatory matters and prudential supervision. He assists banks, financial institutions and FinTech’s with the obtaining of the licences and authorizations required to exercise their activities (banking license, PSD2 license, investment firm license, consumer lending authorization, marketing of financial products, etc.). He is in regular contact with the FSMA, the NBB and the FPS Economy.
Laurent also has an extensive experience (litigation, advice and drafting of contractual documentation) in financial investments, asset management, MiFID, derivatives and insurance products.
He assists both credit institutions and corporate clients in acquisition and project finance transactions and drafts complex loan agreements (e.g. lombard loan agreements, convertible loan agreements).
Laurent has further developed specific skills in the area of embargo and international economic sanctions. He advises financial institutions on compliance matters relating to the implementation of sanctions adopted by the Council of the EU. He regularly appears before the General Court of the EU in Luxembourg in embargoes-related cases.
Laurent finally represents domestic and overseas clients in financial litigation and arbitration regarding, among others, bank and broker liability as well as white collar crime.
He frequently publishes and is invited as speaker in conferences and seminars.
Laurent is registered with the Brussels Bar (2010).
Laurent holds a master’s degree in law from the Catholic University of Louvain (2009) as well as an LL.M from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) (2010).
